Thanks again to NECN on Twitter (@NECN & @rdsahl ) tonight we had the chance to follow up with Mike Capuano (@capuano4senate) on the topic of net neutrality. Like most of his answers tonight his response was short and to the point.

Q: How do you see yourself contributing to our technological future. For instance are you for net neutrality?

A: “I am in favor of net neutrality, absolutely in favor of net neutrality. I use the internet as much as anybody my age, not as much as young people, and I don’t want to be interfered with at all.”

This was in stark contrast to Alan Khazei’s (@AlanKhazei) impassioned response to the same question earlier this month:

“The internet is an extraordinary invention that can empower people, make our democracy work better, share information, and facilitate small business entrepreneurs. We have to have net neutrality, we should not let big companies be able to dominate the internet and control it.”

We’re glad we had a chance to ask this question, it was meant to gauge the candidates aptitude of the online/technology space. While Mr. Capuano’s response is in line with the status quo we’re still not sure which side of the debate he would fall based on his answer alone, especially if a large number of companies made the case that net neutrality stifles their ability to innovate.

It would be foolish to believe that the next Senator from Massachusetts won’t have a say in how the internet develops our world in the 21st century. A lot of changes in this space are on the horizon, and we need informed champions of technology in every area of government. Failing to do so would be a detriment to the American people.

Late Friday Google filed the newest version of a settlement that now restricts the ways Google can make money from scanning and digitizing out-of-print books. It only applies only to works from English-speaking countries, and requires the registry to seek out copyright holders who do not come forward.

While the financial terms of the settlement have not changed, several points have and those are available in the Supplemental Notice. If you were a class member under the Original Settlement, but are not a class member under the Amended Settlement, you should visit the partner options at the Google Book Search site in order to learn about Google’s current policies with respect to the removal of your works from its databases.

The New Proposed Timeline For Authors:

The deadline to claim Books and Inserts for Cash Payments has been extended from January 5, 2010 to March 31, 2011. The Removal deadline as to Google has been extended from April 5, 2011 to March 9, 2012.

Things To Remember About The Case

The settlement offer is still under judicial review and until complete the matter is still unresolved.

For now The Court will outline a time-line that usually includes a notice period, an objection period, and a Final Fairness hearing most likely taking place in early 2010.

Tonight we had an opportunity to pose a question to Massachusetts Senate Candidate Alan Khazei about net neutrality. To our surprise he was very passionate about the subject.

The following is Alan Khazei’s answer to our question about net neutrality. It was taken from NECN’s broadcast and transcribed by us for publication here on our site. This was made possible by NECNs use of Twitter (Thanks @NECN!)

OnlineWriters

Q: How do you see yourself contributing to our technological future. For instance are you for net neutrality?

Alan Khazei

A: I am absolutely for net neutrality. The internet is an extraordinary invention that can empower people, make our democracy work better, share information, and facilitate small business entrepreneurs. We have to have net neutrality, we should not let big companies be able to dominate the internet and control it.

I will fight for this.

Larry Lessig who has been the leader on this is a good friend of mine, supporting my campaign, I know the people who are driving this, and ill fight hard for it.

Again, Its the PACs, the lobbyists, and the special interests who are trying to control the internet, and its the greatest tool of democracy yet to be invented, besides the very foundation of creating America so I will be fighting for it.

We’re glad Mr. Khazei is as well informed as he is and hopes he continues to have this perspective and insight if he makes it to Washington.

Disclaimer: We’re not endorsing him yet, but we sure like what he has to say.

Backlinks are an important asset to any online writer. They indicate to the search engines how your site exists in relation to other sites. For instance if you run a cooking website and most of the publicity you get from other websites is coming from ones that specialize in cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats the search engines can tell your a baker, and the search terms that return your site as a top result will reflect that.

We encourage you to set up a blog here at OnlineWriters.org to promote your works on other sites, to help build your backlink popularity and improve your organic listing positions for the articles you write. The secret will be to remain focused. If you write a lot about a particular topic you should create a blog dedicated to that topic and add a reference to each of your works around the web on that topic. The better you maintain the focus, the more effective the strategy will become.

In the long run you’ll find your articles become indexed more quickly once you link to them from our site. As an added bonus you as a writer are able to point to a single source to reference all your works on a given topic.

Here’s a plan to put this tip into action today!

1.) Pick A Topic

2.) Register a blog for your topic (Topic.onlinewriter.org)

3.) Write a quick overview of your topic then list the resources you have created, linking to them from your new blog.
